Shelton Laurel River

The Shelton Laurel River flows through Madison County near the town of Hot Springs, North Carolina. This river eventually empties into the lower French Broad River. It is aproximately 35 minutes from the shop and a great location for a half day trip. It is a seasonal fishery - the best fishing is during the Catch and Release period between the 1st of October and the first Saturday in June. Fishing during this period is outstanding as several monthly stockings allow for an abundance of fish.

The Shelton Laurel meanders along NC Highway 25/70 and is very accessible. Because of its more northern location, the river sees less anglers than some of our more southern rivers. It is not a river known for its aesthetic beauty but one that regularly yeilds big fish and big numbers.

Because of the stocking and the regulations, the number of fish usually caught on the Shelton Laurel and similarly managed rivers is usually higher than some of our other rivers. The size of the fish caught usually range between 10 and 16 inches with some even breaking the 20 inch mark. The secrets to a good day of fishing on the Shelton Laurel is timing and the right flies. Hiring a guide will take the guesswork out of the day and put you in more fish-catching oportunities.
